MHI to Launch Gear Cutting Machine Production in Bengaluru, India

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) will commence gear cutting machine production in Bengaluru (previously Bangalore), India, this October. In liaison with its existing local subsidiary producing gear cutting tools, the company will establish a structure enabling integrated provision of high-precision gear cutting systems. The initiative aims at responding swiftly to vigorous demand for equipment investment from India’s automobile-related manufacturers against the backdrop of the country’s sharp increase in vehicle production.

The new plant will be launched by a wholly owned local MHI subsidiary: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries India Private Ltd. (MHII). Bengaluru is home to many manufacturers and related suppliers of motorcycles and automobiles. To date MHII has undertaken marketing support and business development activities for the local automobile industry; now the company is to establish a business unit to take charge of manufacturing and marketing of machine tools.

Plans call for incremental expansion of local production of machine tools. During the initial year of production MHII will procure various small-size machines in finished form – gear hobbing, shaping and shaving machines for the production of motorcycles, which are very popular in the Indian market – and attach peripheral devices, etc. at the new plant. The production target for the Bengaluru facility is set at about 40 units in the initial year, to be expanded to 100 units/year production capability through local parts procurement within two or three years.

In 2005 MHI established Mitsubishi Heavy Industries India Precision Tools, Ltd. (MHI-IPT)* through the acquisition of a local gear cutting tool manufacturer. In 2007 MHI-IPT expanded its production capacity with the launch of a new plant, enabling MHI to secure the leading position in India’s market for gear cutting machines and tools. Now, with the commencement of gear cutting machine production directly in India, the company will become able to integrally handle manufacturing, sales and maintenance services in India for both cutting tools and machines that enable high-precision gear machining. The result will be a dynamic integrated service structure of a kind no other company has ever been able to provide in India.

MHI Licenses Vessel Steering Gear and Deck Machinery Technology

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has signed an agreement with Jiangsu Masada Heavy Industries Co, Ltd., in Jiangsu Province, China, under which MHI is to license production and marketing of steering gears and deck machinery based on company technology to Jiangsu Masada. Previously in 2008 MHI licensed deck crane technology to Jiangsu Masada - then known as Nantong Masada Ship Machinery Co., Ltd. With the latest licensing agreement Jiangsu Masada will now be able to establish a structure for providing three hydraulic marine machinery in combination to its customers, a move expected to enable the company to expand its share in the rapidly growing Chinese shipbuilding market.

The steering gear and deck machinery technologies to be licensed are for small and medium-sized under-Panamax* vessels. Hydraulic equipments to drive the machinery will be supplied by MHI. With the addition of these two products, Jiangsu Masada will become the only Chinese manufacturer able to provide all three products under the same brand name – Mitsubishi. The company will also be in a position to pursue synergetic effects in marketing, for example by offering a combination of products as a package. The first unit to be produced under licensing is slated for completion before year’s end. Plans call for Jiangsu Masada to begin operation of a new plant having more than double the production capacity of its present factory, thus driving acceleration of its products’ market penetration.

Originally Jiangsu Masada was jointly established in 2005 by Masada Ironworks Co., Ltd., a Japanese winch manufacturer based in Osaka, and Nantong Universal Machinery Co., Ltd., an industrial machinery manufacturer in Jiangsu, to produce marine deck equipment under the name of Nantong Masada Ship Machinery Co., Ltd. Since licensing the deck crane technology, the company has steadily expanded production, and plans for 2012 aim for manufacture of 200 units. Last year the company changed its name to Jiangsu Masada Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., and it is pushing vigorous business expansion and increasing production capacity.

Steering gears are machinery to operate ship’s rudder by electric driven hydraulic pumps. MHI manufactured its first machine of this kind in 1935. Deck machinery consists of an anchor windlasses, which are used for anchoring and anchor hoisting, and a mooring winches, which are used to moor a vessel to a pier or berthing facilities. MHI manufactured its first unit in 1962. Hitachi boosts global production capacity for mining machines

Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (HCM) has announced plans to significantly boost its global production capacity for mining machines, such as large and ultra-large hydraulic excavators and dump trucks. It will not only expand two of its existing plants, but will also construct new facilities in Hitachinaka City, Japan. The manufacturer also intends to invest in its Indonesian and Canadian locations to further increase production and improve efficiency on a global basis. The total cost will be approximately €430million (€370million in Japan; €30million globally).

Sales of mining machinery are expected to continue to grow due to the substantial demand for resources around the world. As of 2013, HCM predicts annual production of 170 units of large hydraulic excavators up to 120 tonnes; 240 units of ultra-large hydraulic excavators between 190 and 800 tonnes; and 260 units of dump trucks with a loading capacity of 190 to 300 tonnes.

Therefore, HCM has decided to increase the production capacity for its mining machines as well as the components required for after-sales servicing. It believes the quality of the machines will be enhanced and costs will be reduced by focusing on production plants close to its development base at Tsuchiura Works, located in Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture.

Hitachinaka-Rinko Works will be extended by 9,950m2 to create space for assembling large and ultra-large excavators and dump trucks, plus a new training centre. In March 2012, HCM will acquire 78,312m2 of land adjacent to both the harbour and Hitachinaka-Rinko Works, for the construction of a 29,297m2 plant. The new facility will produce frames of large and ultra-large excavators and dump trucks, and accommodate employee facilities and an office.

Hitachinaka Works will also be extended by 29,900m2 for the machining of the components required by mining machines. In addition, HCM has acquired 224,335m2 adjacent to the Hitachinaka Works for the construction of a 37,155m2 plant. Components previously manufactured at Hitachinaka Works will be transferred to the new plant, where they will be assembled to form modules (a functional group of components). The new plant will act as a main distribution base, transferring the modules to Hitachinaka-Rinko Works and shipping them to the plants in Canada and Indonesia, for efficient machine assembly.

Work has already begun on the extension work at the two Japanese facilities and is due for completion by the end of 2012. The two new plants will be fully operational by October 2013. More than 500 new jobs will have been created in Japan by 2015.

With NTN Noto and the adjacent plant that it acquired in January, the new plant which will be constructed at NTN Hakui, and NTN HoudatsuShimizu and NTN Shika that are already in operation, NTN is working at establishing an integrated production system for industrial machinery bearings in the Noto region, and improving productivity and cost competitiveness.
